Four metros, five anchor cities
Dallas and Fort Worth are separate cities within the Dallas–Fort Worth–Arlington metropolitan statistical area. Houston, Austin and San Antonio each anchor another MSA. This guide’s population panel adds those four metro areas; it does not add just the five city populations. Census metro data ↗

Where does the Triangle end?
There is no single boundary used by every researcher. A 2023 UT Austin report uses a wider 66-county study area, including communities outside the four major metros. Its totals cannot be compared directly with a four-MSA sum without reconciling geography and dates. See the research definition ↗
Growth is not the same everywhere
The Dallas Fed’s metro profiles show different industry mixes. Finance, transportation, technology, manufacturing, energy, tourism and health-related activity carry different weight from place to place. Three questions for any big number
- Where? City limits, an MSA, the whole state or a custom region?
- When? A census count, an annual estimate, or a future projection?
- What? People, jobs, investment announcements or completed activity?
Look for those labels before comparing headlines. This guide dates its sources and keeps forecasts separate from measured results.
